PODIUM BASED ARCHITECTURE ASSURES STRENGTH AND SUPPORT TO SKYSCRAPERS FOR LONG LIFE
In the contemporary world podium based designs are preferred over other types of constructions. As per Encyclopedia Britannic a podium (plural podiums, or podia) in architecture means any of various elements that form the “foot,” or base, of a structure, such as a raised pedestal or base, a low wall supporting columns, or the structurally or decoratively emphasized lowest portion of a wall. Sometimes the basement story of a building may be treated as a podium. The podium is usually designed with a modeled base and plinth at the bottom; a central surface known as a die, or dado; and a projecting cornice, or cap. But in general parlance podium means a platform raised above the surrounding level to give prominence to a person on it.
Podium based construction is not new to the Indian or world architecture. Right from ancient Egyptian temples to Roman palaces to baths in Mohenjo Daro, podium based architectural marvels can be seen everywhere. Even in the medieval India Mughal emperors and their contemporary other Indian rulers extensively used such architectural form to create timeless marvels like Humayun Tomb, Taj Mahal etc.
It again gained momentum in the modern world with the increase in the urban population which resulted in scarcity of usable land and therefore high rise buildings. Earlier such architecture was mostly used by royals and affluent to highlight their prominence in the society, though safety and strengths were also their integral part, but in modern days it is being used as a strong support base for huge multi-story concrete skyscrapers.
Some of the modern world famous tallest buildings like Burj Kahlifa, the tallest building of the world, CN Tower (553.33 meters), Taipei 101 (508 meters), Petronas Towers (452 meters) and Willis (Sears) Tower (442 meters) have all used podium based architecture.
Podium based architecture is being used since time immemorial in the flood prone areas and buildings constructed on the banks of rivers or other water bodies. It has its own significance in earthquake prone areas too. Earthquake resistant technologies like Base Isolation use podiums to accommodate shock absorbers which enable the building to float on systems like padded cylinders, ball bearings and springs. They act like shock absorbers and allow the building to alienate itself from shaking ground. In the event of big earthquake, they can swing up to a few feet. Such buildings have buffer zones of their own which prevent them swinging into adjacent buildings.
With land resource squeezing in urban areas due to rapid growth in population, podium based building designs are now proving to be a effective solution for parking problem too. In cosmopolitan cities like New York, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Mumbai etc podiums are now commonly used as troubleshooters. Almost all the major mega under construction projects across the world like Al Kazim Towers (Dubai), Brisbane Sky tower (New York), Wilshire Grand (Los Angeles) etc are using podium based building designs to maximize space utilization and safety
Podium based designs help in solving parking problem in various ways. Firstly taller/higher density buildings may be designed with parking structures constructed of concrete or fire-proofed steel under a residential structure built using any construction method including concrete block, conventional wood or light steel frame. Secondly partially sub-grade (4 to 5 feet above grade) parking structures reduce excavation costs and can be naturally ventilated eliminating the need for mechanical ventilation. Thirdly it also elevates the first floor living area above the street level, which can increase privacy and allow for raised stoops or porches, which fit into many residential neighborhoods.
Lastly podium generates flexibility in the building. It can be constructed in many ways depending on the height of the building. Conventional wood or light steel construction built above a concrete podium can often be built independently of the structural system allowing for a large variety of building configurations.
Let alone residential projects, modern malls and other commercial spaces across the globe are now using podium based designs for providing maximum parking space.
Mr. Anil Mithas, Chairman & Managing Director, Unnati Fortune Group says that keeping track with latest construction technologies and architectural trends his group has also used podium based designs for its flagship project Aranya at Sector – 119. He says that the Aranya project is an IGBC registered certified green project which has used latest earthquake resistant technology for the complete safety and security of its residents. He says that since Aranya is a forest themed project, podium based design has enabled them to use maximum land for this theme by providing sufficient space for parking and other routine requirements.
It may be known that to justify its name “Aranya (forest)” the Unnati Fortune Group has decided to leave seventy percent of this eighteen acre luxury two and three bedroom project under green cover with breathtaking water ways. They have proposed to develop a specially designed Fragrance Garden and a jogging track across the project to give residents and visitors a rich and healthy feel of a pleasant, dense yet totally safe and secure forest where they can stroll or jog like a king.
